Sand Creek Road Pedestrian Access Improvements

Village of Colonie, New York

This project is owned by the Village of Colonie and involved the preliminary and final design for the installation of a pedestrian facility on Sand Creek Road.

Residents adjacent to and on Sand Creek Road were concerned with the lack of a safe pedestrian facility. They typically drove a short distance from their homes to Hannaford Plaza and various establishments along Wolf Road. The Village recognized the need to provide a safe pedestrian facility that would encourage walking and reduce the dependency on motorized vehicles.

Laberge Group was hired to develop a plan to accommodate pedestrian traffic and also investigate options to calm traffic speeds. The plan that was developed and approved by the Village included placing concrete curbs and sidewalks along the north side of the road. Also, edge line striping was included to reduce the width of the travel lanes for the purpose of calming vehicular traffic.

The project activities included preparation of roadway plans, roadway profiles, driveway access improvements, proposed curbs and sidewalks along the north side, storm sewer modifications, miscellaneous details, maintenance and protection of traffic plans, preparation of contract documents, engineer's cost estimate, providing on-site construction observation and preparation of record drawings.
