NYS Route 80 Bridge Replacements

Laberge Group performed preliminary and final design services for the replacement of four bridges and associated roadway improvements, along Route 80, which is a two-lane rural collector road.
Preliminary design activities included:
- Evaluating existing transportation conditions, deficiencies and needs.
- Developing design alternatives (preliminary plans, profiles and typical sections).
- Preliminary opinion of construction cost for each alternative.
- Right-of-way impacts.
- Addressing social, economic and environmental issues (impact on wetlands, farmland assessment, contaminated materials assessment, general ecology and wildlife and anticipated permits).
- Preparing visual aids and brochures.
- Preparing a design report/environmental document.
Final design involved developing plans, specifications and final opinion of construction cost including:
- Typical roadway sections
- Off-site and on-site detour plans
- Suggested construction sequence and maintenance and protection of traffic
- Roadway plans, profiles and superelevation
- Soil erosion and sediment control plans and details
- Drainage and utility plans and details
- Water and sewer relocation/replacement plans and details
Of particular concern during the design process was water and sewer relocation/replacement and impact on federal wetlands. Laberge Group incorporated the use of jacking steel casings under the Chenango River in order to minimize impact to the federal jurisdictional wetlands. Additionally, Laberge Group developed plans, details and special specifications for constructing a new sanitary sewer pumping station chamber that included electrical and mechanical system components.
Our overall rating for this project by NYSDOT was 9. NYSDOT Consultant Management Bureau staff made the following comments regarding our performance on the project:
