Jupiter Lane Realignment

Village of Colonie, Albany County, New York, PIN 1754.94

Laberge Group performed all planning, design and construction services for the realignment of Jupiter Lane to form a four-way intersection with Central Avenue and Locust Park.

This project provided operational improvements along Central Avenue (NYS Route 5) by eliminating an offset intersection. (Jupiter Lane and Locust Park approach legs were not aligned with each other). Both the Jupiter Lane and Locust Park intersection with Central Avenue were controlled by traffic signals. In addition to the geometric improvements, this project eliminated a traffic control signal and constructed a new fully actuated signal system, improving the level of service in the project area.

In addition, Laberge Group assisted the Village in the purchase of lands needed to realign the road by engaging qualified real estate appraisers to determine the value of the properties.

 

 

 

Design activities included preparation of the following plans:

  • Typical roadway sections
  • Maintenance and protection of traffic
  • Drainage plans and details
  • Realignment plans, profiles and super elevation
  • New traffic signal system plans and details
  • Signing and pavement marking plans
  • Right-of-way survey and mapping

Laberge Group provided on-site construction observation staff whose duties included review of field work and shop drawings contract document interpretation, project record maintenance, payment request and project schedule review, and coordination with Village officials.

The realignment of Jupiter Lane significantly impacted the parking lots of the Econo Lodge, Butcher Block and Pizza Hut establishments. As part of the project, Laberge Group developed preliminary and final parking lot design for each establishment. Design included new driveway connections to realigned Jupiter Lane, reconfigured parking areas to maximize parking spaces, curbed islands, sidewalks and landscaping amenities (trees, shrubs, topsoil and seeding).
